New Graduate Racing Position

40hrs
£34,000 – £42,000pa

Are you a new graduate vet with an interest in racing work? Do you seek a supportive environment in which you can learn and develop your skills as a racehorse and equine ambulatory vet?

About us

The Minster Equine Practice is an equine-only ambulatory practice based near York and Malton in North Yorkshire. We are a young, dynamic, and enthusiastic team of 5 vets and 8 support team members, who recently voted the Minster Equine Practice as an ‘outstanding’ company to work for.

We have a varied caseload of sport and racehorses as well as leisure horses. We are a well equipped practice with state-of-the-art wireless digital radiography, ultrasound, videoscopes and gastroscopes that enable us to provide a modern ambulatory veterinary service. Our purpose-built clinic in Poppleton and smaller branch at Malton are fully equipped to allow further investigation that cannot be performed out in the field.

What we can offer you

Our experienced vets either hold, or are working towards, an RCVS certificate covering a wide variety of disciplines. We will help you to develop your skills in racehorse work, diagnostic lameness and medicine investigations. Initially we will give you training with our senior racing vet, where you will gain experience of lameness and clinical evaluations of racehorses on racing yards. There will be exposure to diagnostics and imaging, including gastroscopy, radiography and ultrasound. We will help you to become confident at performing upper airway endoscopy and evaluation with tracheal wash collection and overground endoscopy.

Your day-to-day work will include routine castrations, treatment of simple lacerations, blood screening as well as routine preventative care and medicine. Alongside this, there will be opportunity for anatomy dissections, cadaver diagnostic anaesthesia techniques, and training in evaluation and stabilisation of acute fractures with our Advanced Practitioner in equine orthopaedics.

After your first year, you will be encouraged to develop increased case responsibility with assistance from our senior race yard vet and, depending on your experience, you will become part of our racecourse vet team at York Racecourse.

We offer a generous CPD allowance to assist you in your development and you will also be enrolled on the VetPartners Equine New Graduate Scheme. This means that you will have the opportunity to visit other practices within the VetPartners group, gaining exposure to the hugely varied caseload that equine veterinary medicine has to offer. Furthermore, after a period with us, we encourage and help facilitate time abroad to travel to the southern hemisphere, gaining further experience in racing practice around the world.

Initially you will not be required to undertake out-of-hours visits, but you may be required for routine Saturday morning race work. Once you are confident in your skills we will encourage you to attend routine ambulatory calls and you will join the team on an equally shared 1 in 8 out-of-hours rota, under supervision if necessary.

A healthy work-life balance is important to us, and so you will enjoy 7.2 weeks holiday per year, time off in lieu for weekends spent on-call. We also welcome flexible working requests.
